Not only were buffs and support effects useful in battle, but the freedom to mix and match powers gave players a lot of choice when it came to party-building. Golden Sun already had all the right ingredients for a deeply-immersive game. RELATED: Why Mario Golf: Super Rush's RPG Element Is a Welcome Returnĭespite Golden Sun's failure to live up to its franchise potential, however, there is arguably still room in the JRPG market for some kind of successor. Sad as it may be, it's probably best to let Golden Sun die with dignity instead of trying to make its lightning strike twice. Characters like Himi infamously had nothing to do with the main plot, and there simply isn't anything iconic or interesting enough about the rest to justify bringing them back. Not helping either is the fact that Dark Dawn had an incredibly simple cast, even by Golden Sun's standards. The story explored a varied world but spread its narrative too thinly to accommodate the eight-person party. That would be a hard sell for any story-driven franchise, much less one that keeps taking decade-long breaks every other game. Most fans of the original games have long since moved on, and continuing Dark Dawn's narrative would force potential newcomers to familiarize themselves with three games worth of history to get up to speed. Related: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne's Remaster Is a Classic PS2 JRPG RebornĮven if the series does by some miracle get a continuation, it would be concluding a tale that's been abandoned for over ten years. It sales were nowhere near as strong as before, and the games have laid dead in the water since. Once again, the ending teased a sequel, but this time there was no conclusion in sight. Despite a few new complications, like political tensions between growing nations and an expansion of the series' magic system, the game felt more like a series of side quests than a coherent narrative unto itself. The mechanics recreated the old systems without any significant evolution, and the plot ultimately went nowhere. Unfortunately, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn was the only one, and it failed to advance the story or gameplay in any meaningful way. ![]()
